Initiative is a leadership action. It means taking action even though you have not been given orders. It means meeting new and unexpected situations with prompt action. It includes using resourcefulness to get something done without the normal material or methods being available to you. What are some things that need to be done for your group or at home that you can do without being told?

Critical Thinking

Consider the following situation on your own: You are the content editor for your school’s YouTube channel. You are supposed to watch and approve appropriate student videos that are posted on the school’s channel. However, there are so many videos students made during Homecoming week, you do not have time to watch them all, so you approve several videos from people you know without watching them. However, your school’s principal calls you into their office and asks why you approved some inappropriate videos.

What do you do? Try to think of a few different things you could do (positive, negative, and neutral). What might the results of your actions be?

Collaboration

For a small group, each student presents their ideas to the whole class. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.

For a larger group, divide students into small groups and have students present their ideas to the small group. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.

Application

Review your SMART goal and think about this upcoming week. How might you work better with others to help you achieve your goal? What actions will you take? What might the results of your actions be?
