Introduction
Justice is a leadership trait. It is important for leaders to be fair and consistent with everyone.
How might being fair help you achieve your goals?
What might be some ways to practice being fair this week? What might be the outcome?
Critical Thinking
Consider the following situation on your own: You have just been promoted to Team Leader of the group of baristas at your part-time job at Joe’s Coffee House. Your boss has been targeting a member of your team, Robert, because Robert is gay. He often makes gay jokes behind his back. He pulls you aside to tell you to find a reason to fire Robert. He says if you want to continue to work, Robert should be fired by the end of the month.
In your opinion, Robert is one of the best workers on your team. He is always on time, comes to work dressed appropriately, has exceptional customer service, and is always willing to help wherever is needed.
Joe’s Coffee House is extremely generous to its student workers. They offer college reimbursement for those students who have been employed over one year and continue to work for them through college and they offer partial reimbursement for those who return on college breaks to work in the coffee shop. You are 6 months from graduation with acceptances from two universities. Your parents are extremely worried about how they will pay for your college education.
What do you do? Try to think of a few different things you could do (positive, negative, and neutral). What might the results of your actions be?
Collaboration
For a small group, each student presents their ideas to the whole class. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.
For a larger group, divide students into small groups and have students present their ideas to the small group. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.
Application
Review your SMART goal and think about this upcoming week. How might you practice being fair to help you achieve your goal? What actions will you take? What might the results of your actions be?
