As a leader, you are the standard-bearer of your school’s history, reputation, and values. People look to you for their cues and everything that you say and do or fail to say and do will set the tone for your school. You are always in charge in some facet by way of your actions, gestures, and influence.

How might setting a positive tone help you achieve your goals?

Critical Thinking

Consider the following situation on your own: You are the new dance captain and have a lot of great ideas for the spring dance show. However, the teammate that handles the music and all the audio is out sick. You realize there are a lot of aspects of the production you really don’t know much about and you are relying on the knowledge of a few people. You can try to learn about some of these roles, but you are worried you do not have enough time. You could look for new team members with this knowledge, but you are worried you do not have time for recruiting new team members either.

What do you do? Try to think of a few different things you could do (positive, negative, and neutral). What might the results of your actions be?

Collaboration

For a small group, each student presents their ideas to the whole class. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.

For a larger group, divide students into small groups and have students present their ideas to the small group. Provide opportunity for positive feedback from peers or support if they are struggling to think of ideas.

Application

Review your SMART goal and think about this upcoming week. How might you practice setting a positive tone to help you achieve your goal? What actions will you take? What might the results of your actions be?
